What is PGT-SR?
PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) is a genetic test used during IVF to identify embryos that have inherited an unbalanced chromosomal rearrangement from a parent who carries a balanced translocation or inversion. Couples in which one partner carries a balanced structural rearrangement have an increased risk of recurrent miscarriage or having a child with birth defects or developmental delay. PGT-SR allows selection of embryos that are either balanced (like the carrier parent) or have a normal chromosome set, so that only those embryos are transferred.
At Seeds of Innocence, we offer PGT-SR as part of our comprehensive genetic testing services to help such couples achieve a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of passing on unbalanced chromosomes.
Why is PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) Done?
PGT-SR is recommended when one or both partners carry a balanced chromosomal rearrangement, such as:
Why is PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) Done?
PGT-SR is done to screen embryos for unbalanced chromosomal structural rearrangements (e.g. from a parent with a translocation or inversion) before transfer, to reduce the risk of miscarriage and of having a child with an unbalanced chromosome abnormality.
What Does PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) Check?
PGT-SR checks embryos for:
How is PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) Performed?
PGT-SR is performed during an IVF cycle after embryo biopsy. A preliminary work-up (parent blood/karyotype and probe design) is required. The biopsy cells are analyzed in the lab for the rearrangement; results indicate which embryos are suitable for transfer.
Parent karyotype and probe design for the specific rearrangement.
Embryos are created and grown to blastocyst stage (day 5–6).
A few cells are removed from each embryo for genetic testing.
Cells are tested for the rearrangement; balanced or normal embryos are identified for transfer.
How to Prepare for PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements)
You will need a karyotype and genetic counseling to confirm the rearrangement and plan the test. Then you will undergo an IVF cycle. Your doctor and genetic counselor will guide you through timing and consent.
Understanding PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements) Results
Results show which embryos carry an unbalanced rearrangement and which are balanced or normal. Only embryos suitable for transfer are recommended. Your genetic counselor and doctor will explain the results and next steps.
Cost of PGT-SR (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements)
PGT-SR cost in India depends on the type of rearrangement and number of embryos tested. Contact us for current pricing and to book an appointment.
